Brave
New Workshop Pays Tribute to Summer Institutions In
"Minnesota Summer: It's Not
the Heat,It's the Stupidity!
or Why Can't We All Just Get A Thong?"
Minneapolis, Minn, June 8, 2001---The Brave New Workshop Theatre
(BNW), founded by Dudley Riggs in 1958, announces the upcoming opening
of its summer 2001 show, titled Minnesota Summer: It's Not the
Heat, It's the Stupidity! or Why Can't We All Just Get a Thong?.
The show previews June 28-30, opens July 5 and runs through August
18 and is the Workshop's 235th comedy revue. The currently running
production, When Xtreme Things Happen to Boring People closes Saturday,
June 23, 2001.
The Brave New Workshop pays homage to the other Minnesota season -
when all Minnesotans are freed from the shackle of winter and Scandinavians
actually drop the stoicism to smile. The cast enjoys the summer season
with sketches like Campfire Stories that depict tales of horror
made twice as scary because they involve your own camp counselor and
I-90 Jazz, a surrealistic tribute to the most boring highway
in America.
Minnesota Summer: It's Not the Heat, It's the Stupidity! is
written and performed by cast members Bryan Schmeling and Tim Uren
and main stage newcomers George Keller, Levi Weinhagen and Laura Zabel.
Veteran actor and audience favorite, Caleb McEwen directs. Music director
and alumnus Peter Guertin takes on his 27th production, and Josh McEwen
provides technical direction.

The Brave
New Workshop Theatre, founded by Dudley Riggs in 1958, is the longest
running satirical comedy theatre in the country, and the third oldest
theatre of any kind in the Twin Cities. The BNW has exposed more than
three million people to its world famous satirical comedy and improvisation.
The theatre was located at 2605 Hennepin Avenue South from 1965 until
November 1998 when it moved the main stage performances to Calhoun
Square. The 2605 Hennepin space remains open and has become the primary
"workshop" for Brave New Institute classes and experimental
theatre productions, and its name is now the historic "Brave
New Institute & ETC Theatre." The new theatre at Calhoun
Square is "The Brave New Workshop Theatre, founded by Dudley
Riggs in 1958." The Brave New Workshop also operates a third
space in Saint Paul at the newly remodeled Saint Paul Palace Theatre,
where it presents Flanagan's Wake, the interactive Irish comedy.
