Not to be outdone by the many haunting traditions that accompany Halloween,
the St. Paul Palace Theatre has a gloriously mystical history. Opened
in 1916, the Palace Theatre was originally a home for a mixed program
of vaudeville and motion pictures. Among the noted celebrities who
performed there were the Marx Brothers, Burns and Allen, Milton Berle,
Jack Benny, Babe Ruth, and Guy Lombardo. The Palace-Orpheum, as it
was renamed in 1922, was also the home to many first-run St. Paul
showings of Academy Award winning films like Gone With the Wind,
The Best Years of Our Lives, From Here to Eternity,
On The Waterfront, Ben-Hur, and The Godfather.
Presently owned by Kelly Brothers Investments and rented by the Brave
New Workshop Theatre for performances of the Irish comedy and dinner
theatre, Flanagan's Wake, the theatre lobby underwent a major
renovation in 2000. Nonetheless, much of the building retains its
original 3,000-seat theatre, original stage and balcony seating, and
the spirits that many believe still wander throughout.
